Lillie’s caterpillar

March 30, 2012

It’s hard to believe it but Baby D is only a few weeks away from his first birthday.  He’s one of the youngest in his peer group (the babies we met through my post-natal group) and the round of birthdays has begun.  We went to two birthday parties on Sunday — I swear the boy has a better social life than I do.

I figured I would try to make rather than buy birthday presents for all of the little ones this year.  I spent too long um-ing and ah-ing over patterns though, so I started knitting too late and had no hope of completing two caterpillars by Sunday. I finished this one in time though — meet Lillie’s caterpillar — I hope she likes it!

The pattern suggests the use of safety eyes and I do have some stashed away, but the packet says they’re not suitable for under-3s — so this was my first attempt at embroidering facial features onto a toy. The eyes are a little wonky but for a first go I was quite pleased, and if I succeed in making toys for all of D’s friends I guess I will get quite a bit of practice! I was stumped at first over how to hide the starting knot — but after a little experimentation (and a bit of Googling), I learned that the best way was to knot the end of the black yarn and then pull it in from the back of the head. The knot catches in the stuffing and becomes secure — and hidden!

Pattern: Chadwick the Shakespearean Caterpillar by Rebecca Danger (on Ravelry)
Yarn: Various acrylic DK
Needles: 2.75mm DPNs
